Last Day!

NPR's Obudsman, Elizabeth Jensen, talks about the challenges of her job and how NPR has continued to stay on top.

Our last day started off with Amanda Wolfe. She is the digital director of Fitness.com and Shape.com. As a digital director she is in charge of the big picture and strategizing. They are always trying to address to a younger audience while also looking for the next generation. Within the websites they have contributors. The contributors tend to be dermatologists and doctors; this is very beneficial to the content of the sites providing credibility. Her ending advice was to be well-rounded, have writing skills, know the timelines of digital journalism, and have a willingness to try.

The last stop of the trip was NPR. We met with Elizabeth Jensen, Ombudsman and Public Editor. Each week she gets anywhere from 50 to 500 complaint emails. Organizing those emails and deciding what to respond to is just one of the challenges she faces everyday. Thirty percent of the emails received she will respond to in a way to say that they don’t agree but want them to know that they have been heard. Regarding the elections NPR is very conscious of not being bias. Currently it is slightly bias but as the elections it will balance out. It was exciting to hear from the best public radio company.
