From Hoverboards to Podcasts

Catherine and I enjoyed a laugh within the fun and unbeat office of BuzzFeed.

Day five incorporated a lot of new and exciting businesses. We went to BuzzFeed where the office was filled with positive and electric energy—no joke there were employees riding on hoverboards around the office. It was not your typical corporate office with its giant “trashy” “OMG” and “WTF” stickers. We met up with Elaina Wahl, who is the Junior Writer at BuzzFeed. She focuses on animal content. The company has been questioned on whether it should be considered real journalism. When asked that question they explained that it is real journalism, the news part is growing and they are trying to reach out for a bigger audience in “serious news”. BuzzFeed is a company that is both news and entertainment. They are known for their entertainment side because the company revolves around social media and what people are sharing. BuzzFeed had an incredible work culture, the atmosphere allows employees to be stress free and to focus on having a positive outlook.

After leaving BuzzFeed, we trekked to Brooklyn to visit Gimlet Media. Alex Blumberg, Co-founder and CEO, was kind of enough to discuss his new podcast business. Gimlet Media produces narrative podcasts. They currently have three podcasts series, with a fourth one being released soon. They have already been successful at producing honest podcasts for their listeners. Alex compared the differences between audio and video. With audio a question has to be raised to create a sense of narrative proportion. He believed that stories about the past is easier on audio rather than video. Audio does a fantastic job tapping into the audience’s emotions, by hearing a voice, a listener’s mind create a person to go with that voice. Alex said that the “future is bright” for audio and that it is just the beginning for podcasts. Instead of binge watching Netflix, people will binge listening to podcasts.

We stayed in Brooklyn to the innovative media company, Vice. Vice is a print magazine and a website that focuses on news, art, and culture. Taylor Dolven, recent Miami graduate, discussed her job as a researcher and reporter for Vice Media’s documentary television program on HBO called “Vice”. The television show involves two separate stories within a 30-minute episode. Taylor’s boss joined us to give us advice on life; go do what you love.
