Bloomberg, ABC, The Marshall Project

After a successful day, we meet with Larry Wilmore (centered) after his hilarious show.

The third day started at Bloomberg. Once you step in the building you have this instant feeling that you are a part of something special. Numerous employees are walking with determination on their faces. They all are innovative and extremely intelligent individuals. I was in awe of the building with the glass windows and the abundance of free food (don’t mind if I do). Our first guest at Bloomberg was another Miami alumni- Andy Martin. He provided us with insight into the business journalism world. I didn’t have previous knowledge on the topic, but at Bloomberg that is what it’s all about: business and journalism. He gets the opportunity to write about anything that falls under the umbrella of business. He brought in one of his coworkers- Laura Kelly. She explained her fascinating job as an investigator reporter. As an investigator reporter it is your job to get the facts. She gets in contact with sources; then those sources will disclose information to her. It is her responsibility to figure out their motivation behind releasing confidential information and then no matter what she has to protect her sources. Bloomberg was a great place to learn more about business journalism.

After Bloomberg, we made our way to ABC. There we got the opportunity to be on set of live news. It was a great experience watching the behind the scenes action. We got to watch the weatherman work his magic. After the show we met up with Jane Frye. Jane does on-air social media for the television show, The View. Her job is to connect the hosts of the show with its audience. Viewers will watch the show and will tweet at them asking questions or making general comments. It is Jane’s job to feed the social media content to the hosts, and the hosts can incorporate the feedback into the show. Their goal through social media is to create traffic and to have a loyal audience.

Our last stop of the day was The Marshall Project; their mission is to create and sustain a sense of urgency about criminal justice in America through narratives, articles, projects, etc. Keller is the Editer-in-Chief. He compared his career now with the one with New York Times. He finds that his current position is more “fun” because he has the privilege of interacting with a smaller team. It is easier for him to communicate with a smaller team. He likes that The Marshal Project has a focus, whereas the New York Times covers everything. A student asked him, “If you could change anything about the criminal justice system, what would it be?” His reply was that he wishes we changed the way we think of criminals, have a sense of empathy; not that they are innocent, but there are 65 million people with a criminal background. The Marshall Project is a new publication that has a unique focus.
